Humility, Objectivity are Required For Innovation to Have a Chance to Prosper

A Lack of Humility and Abundance of Prejudice and Fear by Incumbents and the Media Create a Wall Against Outside Innovation.

For humility to win out over prejudice objectivity is first required. When I speak of prejudice, I’m not referring to such with respect to solely racial or age bias, but more specifically what I call “Resume Bias.” This is judgment of others based upon their current resume or reputation in an industry directly pertaining to what a person is capable of accomplishing, creating or inventing.

Hardly will one ever read about a story in the media, other than about great tragedy, which has absent ‘highly branded’ people, businesses, organizations or big money invested. In other words a game changing idea or solution will hardly ever see the light of day in the media unless it has some “Brand Anchor” to secure itself upon. What this inadvertently (or purposely) creates is a bias against innovation coming from outside the “Brand Palace or Walls.”

There is also a parallel prejudice with funding for innovative startups. Granted I often agree with views of venture capitalist and angel investors regarding higher risk investments in startups without an all-star team assembled to execute the plan to build out and get adopted the great innovation the entrepreneurs have come up with. However, fact is most great inventions have come from those yet to establish great resume. Fact is if Steve Jobs never had people provide him his first investment and opportunities to innovate, Apple computer would never have existed and quite possibly we still would be absent touch screen smartphones and apps.

What is quite often missing is a practical or productive “Innovation Filter” to capture the true innovation and ideas. It’s much like being a major league talent scout or assessing a pan of dirt of which the owner says this sample pan is worth $50. With either case prospecting for great talent or riches requires the sifting through and objectively testing first prior to dismissing as being worthless. Talented scouts or surveyors cannot look at a player or a pan of dirt and know there is nothing there, but do we not make judgments every day about others in business? The only way to not miss the grand innovation and solutions is to sift through all opportunities without prejudice or favoritism. Yes, if someone has earned a degree from Harvard or Stanford or not this gives them more credit than if they are an innovator from the local state university. But the simple truth is much innovation does not come from early bloomers or good students.

In politics runs a parallel prejudice. The only way candidates have a viable chance to be elected as a representative at the state or federal level is if they have or able to raise big money, have a highly respected resume, are well-networked or have perhaps a celebrity status. Also, one must walk in accordance with party lines to receive funding and assistance from incumbents.

At the end of the day what is needed most are the best solutions possible to solve our BIG PROBLEMS. However if the media and our 2-party system require BIG MONEY or BIG RESUME to transcend, then our governing system and elections elect only those whom they see fit to be in office, that best serve their interests and the interests of their BIG MONEY supporters.

Relevancy in business, politics or any occupation is the lifeblood that empowers respect and authority, however incumbents without a heart and mind altruistically focused on serving their company and customers or constituents, means great innovations and innovators will never be heard from or seen because incumbents place a higher value over maintaining control, influence and playing it safe than they do solving problems.

To have ears that hear and a heart open to leading by God are the foundation for true innovation and problem solving. King David was called a man after God’s own heart and had no fear, but only boldness in defeating God through using the talents and unique solution God gave him. The disciples, expert fishermen, fished all day and caught nothing headed into the harbor. Jesus said cast your line here on this side of the boat and they pulled in a catch so large it nearly sank their boat. And to close, Jesus came to solve the biggest problem mankind has and will ever face, a need to be made holy, just in order to be in the presence of God. He did this by paying the price for our sins by sacrificing his life for ours so we might have life through his death and resurrection.
