The American Dream - Only about 1 in 9 now live it!

What we call the American Dream is now perhaps more elusive than any time since the great depression. The Tale of Two Choices, below illuminates it's root cause.
Described here is what a minimal version of the American Dream costs a family of four. This chart takes into account a household earning a payroll earned gross income of $100,000/year. It also assumes the family will own 2 cars (with car payments), will give 10% to charity, will take 2-weeks of vacation, will have to pay for health insurance, will have cable TV, broadband Internet, and 4 smartphones, will have outstanding student loan and credit card debt, will go out to dinner and lunch once a week, see a movie or concert once a month and have other miscellaneous expenses.

Why do so little people earn less than enough to share in the American Dream?

7-Fold over the Middle 60% of US household incomes!

"The income gap between the richest 1 percent and the rest of America last year reached the widest point since the Roaring Twenties.

The top 1 percent of U.S. earners collected 19.3 percent of household income in 2012, their largest share since 1928. And the share held by the top 10 percent of earners last year reached a record 48.2 percent.

Last year, the incomes of the top 1 percent rose nearly 20 percent compared with a 1 percent increase for the remaining 99 percent.

The top 1 percent of American households had income above $394,000 last year. The top 10 percent had income exceeding $114,000."

Also corporate profits are at an all time high, while employee compensation has barely increased since 1978. Also CEO compensation has increased 726% since 1978. See chart below provided by the Economic Policy Institute via a WashingtonPost article.
